AS Christmas quickly approaches, Warracknabeal is getting into the mood of the festive season, with decorations popping up all over town.
Every year on December 1, Warracknabeal Action Group with the help of Apex Club of Warracknabeal and their Christmas Decorations Committee assemble, the towns’ Christmas tree in Federation Place.
Warracknabeal Menshed’s Ben May and Merv Morrow with the help of their team constructed the tree over 15 years ago.
This year they were able to refurbish the tree with new lights and decorations with funds from the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise.
Residents can expect to see the tree light up this week.
The three community groups have supported the initiative for many years, embracing the Christmas spirit.
WAG Secretary Sharlene McGinniss said it’s important to keep the spirit alive.
“Christmas is for everyone, it doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old,” Mrs McGinniss said.
“We do it for the benefit of our community, whether it’s a tree or the windows, it gives people the chance to celebrate Christmas who might otherwise not have the opportunity. It’s about bringing our community together; whether it’s good times, or hard times.
“It’s a way of touching base, we get busy in our lives and you forget to stop and smell the roses, so to speak. It’s community, it’s togetherness and it’s fellowship.”
The construction of the three metre tall tree, marks the commencement of a busy Christmas period across the shire.
Around the town the residents can also see many decorations being set up in open shop spaces, where the Christmas Decoration Committee with the help of First Warracknabeal Cubs and Scouts has set up Christmas windows.
A Christmas letter box is up at Warrack Home Timber and Hardware until December 19.
WAG will also be hosting the Christmas festival at Anzac park on December 15, starting at 6pm.
The Warracknabeal and District Band will be performing, schools will be performing, performers from Horsham, singers, food stalls, children entertainment such as face painting, badge making and rumour has it Santa will also make an appearance at the Christmas festival.
Gold coin donations are accepted at the gate.
