THE Warracknabeal Golf Club held its monthly medal day on January 4, while the ladies held a Stableford event.
The Monthly Medal Stroke event, which was sponsored by Naylor Agencies, provided a close encounter, with the top two golfers having to be seperated by a countback.
Winner of the day was Dennis Murphy, who scored 71 points off a 19 handicap.
Close in second was Alan McLean who scored 72 off a 21 handicap.
Other good scorers for the day included Keith Pearce and Ryan McKenzie who shot for 72 points and David Baxter who shot for 73 points off a countback.
Nearest the pins for the mens: David Baxter on the Warracknabeal Post Office fifth, Russell Blanthorn on the Barry Holland seventh, Brendan Murphy on the Hill Ross Financial Services 13th and Ryan McKenzie won the Dennis Murphy second shot on the ninth hole.
In the ladies Stableford event, it was a tussle between Kaye Picken and Carolyn Morcom, with Picken coming out on top with 39 points, followed behind by Morcom on 36 points.
Both Picken and Morcom hit with a 22 handicap for the day.
Nearest the pins for the ladies: Vicki Hinkley on the seventh and Kay Picken on the 13th.
On December 21, both womens’ and men’s golfing events were played with the men’s Versus Par and the women’s Stableford.
Two divisions of mens’ golfers hit the fairways for the Versus Par event sponsored by John Peters and Ken Henderson.
In Division A, Russell Blandthorn hit well, taking out first place with a score of three up on a 12 handicap, while runner up Ashley Purdue hit for one under after a handicap of 10 and a countback.
In Division B, the top two were also decided through a countback, with Keith Pearce taking first place with a score of one up on a 17 handicap, with Ryan Smith in second place who also hit with a 17 handicap.
Good scorers for the men’s event included Bernie Naylor, Norrie Poulton and Nathan McLean all with a score of one under.
Nearest the pins for the men’s were: Richard Bett on the Barry Holland seventh, Brenton Cheney on the Hill Ross Financial Services 13th, and Ross Laycock won the Dennis Murphy second shot on the ninth.
The ladies also hit well all day, with the Stableford event producing a close contest.
The top two were decided via a countback, with winner Kaye Picken scoring 34 points on a 22 handicap.
Runner up Casey Phelan also hit for 34 points on a 11 handicap.
Nearest the pins for the ladies were: Kaye Picken on the Warracknabeal Post Office fifth, Casey Phelan on the seventh and Wendy Hewitt on the 13th.
On December 14, golfers hit the course on a beautiful sunny day for the men’s and ladies’ Stableford events.
The men’s Stableford, sponsored by Roy and Shirley Liersch, saw both the A and B division battle it out on the fairways.
Division A was a tightly contested day, with Michael Cheney winning with a score of 36 points with a 13 handicap.
Peter Barling came in a second with a 12 handicap and a score of 35 points.
Division B was a higher scoring group, with winner Norrie Poulton winning with a score of 40 points after a handicap of 30.
Runner up Keith Pearce scored 39 points with a 17 handicap.
Good scorers for Division B included Steve Hinkley and Brian Scott with a score of 38 points, and Graeme Massey with 37 points.
Nearest the pins for the men were: Dennis Murphy won on his second shot on the ninth, Ash Purdue won on the Barry Holland seventh and Richard Bett won on the Hill Ross Financial Services 13th.
The ladies also hit well in their Stableford event.
Winner Karen Germano hit a score of 43 points after a 19 handicap, while runner up Charmaine Wilson hit for 34 points after a 18 handicap.
Nearest the pins for the ladies were: Karen Germano on the Warracknabeal Post Office fifth and the 13th hole with Mary Barber on the seventh.
Next week’s event at the Warracknabeal Golf Course will be a V Par competition.
