Police appealing for public assistance

POLICE are appealing for public assistance after a 24 year old Warracknabeal man was found with serious injuries on the side of the road in Horsham early Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to Dooen Road where the injured man was found at about 5.50am.

The man was taken to Wimmera Base Hospital with life-threatening injuries.The man died in hospital on Monday.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s injuries and are yet to determine if the man was hit by a car.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

ABC radio spoke to Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Chris VanTunk on Monday morning who said the man was walking along Dooen road in the direction of

Warracknabeal at around 5.30am on the morning of the incident after leaving a few night clubs in town.

“He either lay or has fallen next to the road and he’s been struck by a vehicle it looks like,” Detective Sgt VanTunk said.

Detective Sgt VanTunk appealed to anyone who saw anything or has dash cam footage to contact police.

He said due to the man’s serious condition, they were unable to gather information from him.

Detective VanTunk said he sustained a very serious head injury.

“The driver may not be fully aware the item struck on the road was actually a person, a person with a family who lives in the nearby area.

“So we are appealing to anyone who was driving along that road who may have seen anything on the roadway or near the roadway to call police.

“We are actually looking at really tight time frame now around 5.30am to 5.36am.

“We found footage of him at a nearby service station and we’ve got some accounts from nearby. He wouldn’t have been in that area for very long at all, he would have been passing through,” Detective Sgt VanTunk said.
