A lifetime of love: McDonalds celebrate 60 years
In a heartwarming celebration at their Horsham home on Thursday, April 10, Charles (Chas) and Ann McDonald marked 60 years of marriage – an inspiring milestone of love, commitment and companionship.

Chas, 84, and Ann, 81, tied the knot on April 10 1965 at the Methodist church, now known as Wesley Performing Centre.
Six decades later, their bond remains as strong as ever.
The couple first crossed paths as teenagers in Horsham, although Chas used to live on a farm in Mockinya.
Though they attended different schools, they often found themselves in the same circles.
“He had a friend who was friends with my friend; that’s how we sort of met,” Ann recalled with a smile.
Their romance blossomed over shared outings and long conversations by the local pool – a popular gathering place.
“We spent a lot of time at the swimming pool because that was something new in those days,” Chas said.
“My mate was actually more interested in Ann but I guess I ended up marrying her."
They dated for several years, even at a distance when Chas took up a two-year carpentry contract in Papua New Guinea.
The couple kept in touch through the old-fashioned way of letters.
When he returned home, they announced their engagement.
Together they raised two children: a son who now lives in Melbourne and a daughter who lives nearby and lends a helping hand.
Over the years Chas worked on large regional building projects, often spending time away from home while Ann managed things independently.
“That was probably the hardest time,” Ann said.
“But we give and take a lot between us, and that’s how everything works."
Through all the highs and lows, their love has endured.
“We still love each other and like to do things together,” Ann said.
“He’s always very considerate."
Chas said he thought they were very compatible and recognised each other’s talents.
“She’s a great cook, which I love the most,” he said.
In their twilight years the McDonalds enjoy a quieter life filled with small joys like watching TV, spending time with family and making occasional trips with their children and grandchildren to Happy Wanderer Caravan Park at Wartook.
Ann stays active with craft and knitting groups while Chas volunteers at the local Men’s Shed and the Rotary Club.
Reflecting on six decades together, Chas said, “I think we’re both just very thankful as we’ve had a good life and we’ve had each other.”
Their message to young couples was straightforward.
“You have to be sure and be compatible.
"If you give up too early, you miss out on all the good times that grow stronger with age.”
