A Mum's World: Happy Mother’s Day

How did all of my fellow Mums out there go last weekend? If you were gifted chocolates when you are slimming, champagne when you’re sober and flowers even though you are allergic – I know, I get it – no one is listening to what you are going through…but at least they tried?

They do adore you, they just don’t understand how much of yourself you invest in the wellbeing of others.

Just because you know the name of every toy and friend, exactly what is worrying everyone and all the dietary requirements of friends and family, this superpower will never be fully appreciated by anyone other than another Mum.

The logistics you manage every day, the drop offs, pick ups and counselling sessions along the way, are lifesaving and brilliant.

I see you.

Fortunately, I am feeling blessed and super loved-up after Mother’s Day as my hubby and my three girls put me in their bulging diaries first.

We gathered to guzzle tea, stuff ourselves silly with savory and sweet treats washed down with lashings of the brown stuff and a mere blush of the pink stuff – Rose.

There was barely a cross word said and only one sister on sister jab about the cost of a graduation gown – la!

The musical accompanists did play that gorgeous theme song from the movie ‘Titanic’, but we didn’t go down with the ship and actually didn’t sink at all.

Against all odds, we were all on our very best behaviour, ready to celebrate this crazy thing that is family life.

Kym and I toasted our absent Mums, who were heaven bound two and three years ago respectively.

Our Mums were just the perfect fit for us; pioneer women who could milk a cow, play tennis on a grass court, sew a dress, knit a jumper and preserve fruit.

They graduated to being incredible grandparents who gave good hugs and put the right kind of bank notes into carefully chosen Birthday and Christmas cards.

They were always on our side, very good listeners and ready to have a laugh.

I continue in my determination to follow in their footsteps as a mother.

Listening, loving and loaning everything under the sun when necessary.

After celebrating High Tea with our daughters in the city, Kym and I left the big smoke after a night of tram dings, Police sirens and yelling in the streets, to scoot home along the highway where our puppies and chooks were happy to see us, and we were happy to see lots of big sky, bush and mountain views.

In no time at all I had collected the eggs, an armful of kindling and a wheelbarrow full of wood to create a raging fire in the loungeroom where I stretched out in front of it with a book.

A lovely quiet evening at home without any children in site.

Mother’s Day changes over time, and I don’t feel the least bit guilty about reaching the empty nest phase.

Happy Mother’s Day.
