Ryan Pfitzner, 19, receives the Horsham Young Citizen of the Year award, recognising his contribution and outstanding leadership qualities with local basketball.

Mr Pfitzner is heavily involved in Horsham Amateur Basketball Association. He joined as a junior and has since graduated to the Country Basketball League Men’s Hornets team.

He has coached the boys' squads and is a referee for club games, having qualified with his B Grade badge.

Mr Pfitzner said he was honoured and surprised with the award.

"You don't help out and volunteer for the recognition, but this award is important to me because it's nice to be recognised not only for doing something I enjoy, but doing something for others," Mr Pfitzner said.

"I try to use my passion to improve the lives of others, through coaching and refeering, and then when I am coaching, to be a good model for those who are watching."
