Several young athletes have entered the 2025-26 season with some outstanding accolades as the Horsham Little Athletics officially commenced on Wednesday night.
After impressive 2024-25 seasons, under 14 athletes Benjimen Jowett, Jett Hill and Gretel Blake were recently selected for the Victorian squad for a Little Athletics development tour to New Zealand.
The trio will travel to Tauranga in January, where they will compete in the North Island Colgate Games as part of the tour.
Blake said she was extremely proud of the selection and what it represented for Horsham.
“I didn't expect it but it’s a reward for the commitment of everything that my mum and I have done and everything Mum's done for me,” Blake said.
“It's good to be selected from such a small town – it shows everyone what we're made of.”
In August, several Horsham athletes competed at the Victoria Little Athletics Winter Track and Field Championships, where athletes accumulated scores based on their rankings in various events.
Jack Sawyer took home a silver medal in the under 12 boys, while James Burton, in his last competition before transitioning out of Little Athletics, took home the silver medal in the under 17 boys.
While disappointed to say goodbye to Little Athletics, Burton said it was a great way to finish.
“I started Little Athletics when I was 12 so I've done it for six years, and it's been great fun every week in summer, coming out here and competing or just practising.
“It's always good and the people here are great.
“It was kind of bittersweet knowing Little Athletics was ending but coming second made it all worthwhile in the end.”
Burton has started his transition to senior athletics, competing for Ballarat Harriers in the Athletics Victoria State League for the 2025-26 season.
New president Ben Sawyer said he was excited to take the reins at the club, acknowledging that Little Athletics provided a welcoming environment for kids who may be playing their first sport.
“Little Athletics is always a popular sport in Horsham,” Sawyer said.
“Historically, it's been incredibly well run by the previous committee, and they've set us up really, really well moving forward.
“Because it starts at under sixes and the way it's structured, it's quite often the first sport to people.
“It's a chance for them to come out and just sort of do what they can do without too much pressure because Little Aths is all about getting personal bests each week.”
Anyone interested in signing up can register via the Horsham Little Athletics Facebook group or the Little Athletics Victoria website.
Horsham Little Athletics is held on Wednesdays from 5.15pm at Dudley Cornell Park, with the season lasting into March.
