AFL coach returns to grass roots
AFL legend Alistair Clarkson is heading back to Kaniva, where his football journey first began, for a special reunion with the 1985 premiership-winning team of Kaniva Leeor United Football Netball Club.

Clarkson is the current coach of AFL side North Melbourne.
Clarkson, who grew up in Kaniva near the South Australian border, started his football career with the Bulldogs as a junior.
His talent was evident early, and at the age of 15 he was selected to play in the 1985 grand final, which saw Kaniva claim its last senior flag.
That victory has remained a fond memory for both Clarkson and the local community.
From Kaniva, Clarkson's journey took him to the big league, playing 134 games in the AFL for North Melbourne and Melbourne.
However, it is in the coaching realm where he has truly made his mark.
Clarkson honed his skills at various clubs before being appointed head coach of Hawthorn in 2005.
Under his guidance, the Hawks secured four premierships, with titles in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2015, cementing his place as one of the AFL's most successful and respected coaches.
After a stint away from the Kangaroos, Clarkson returned to North Melbourne in 2023, reconnecting with the club where his professional football story first began.
His connection to Kaniva remains strong, and he says he’s excited to return to his roots for this special event.
The Kaniva Leeor United Football Netball Club is thrilled to welcome Clarkson back, and his return to the town promises to be an unforgettable evening.
On Friday May 30 Clarkson will share stories from his remarkable football journey at the Kaniva Hub at 7.30pm.
Football fans across the Wimmera are invited to attend this exclusive event.
Tickets are available for $20, and roast meat gravy rolls will be offered starting at 6pm for those wanting to eat before the event. Light supper is also included.
As the club expects a large turnout, bookings are essential.
For catering purposes, intending participants are asked to call Sharon on 0458 427 866 or email the club at klufnctreasurer@outlook.com
