Perfect weather is forecast for this Thursday January 26 for the 2023 Warracknabeal and District Australia Day morning at the Warracknabeal Racecourse.

As the event's organiser, the Rotary Club of Warracknabeal is hoping a big crowd will gather to enjoy a free cooked breakfast from 8am and then relax while hearing a spectacular line-up of home-grown talent.

The local Guides and Scouts are involved and the local band will be playing during the breakfast.

Past resident and locally educated Nicole Battley (née Farrall) will be the guest speaker.

Mrs Battley will speak about her journey from Warracknabeal around the world and back to Australia, working mainly in the corporate sphere.

The "Belle of Boolite" and a classically trained professional singer, Sofia Lausen Habel is back in Australia after a year in Europe and will perform at the racecourse on Thursday.

After rave reviews of Lausen Habel’s performance at the Sheep Hills Drive In Opera in 2021, the audience can expect to once again be mesmerised by her beautiful voice.

The highlight of the morning will be the awarding of local Australia Day awards.

Citizen of the Year Barbara Bell will be recognised for her vision and outstanding contribution to the arts and cultural tourism in Warracknabeal over many years.

Sportsperson of the Year Mavis Wardle is a wonderful example of an active community person.

Her impressive list of achievements and contributions to several sports over many decades shows how integral she has been to the Brim and wider community.

Piper Knorpp, at just 12 years of age, is the Young Achiever of the Year.

She will be recognised for her outstanding sporting achievements in athletics, swimming and basketball, in which she has set many records and competed at state level.

People involved in any of these areas of interest are especially encouraged to attend to support and congratulate the three awardees.

The ceremony will also welcome and acknowledge one of the district's new Australian citizens with a small gift.

Being at the racecourse as a new venue means that the entire Australia Day event will be in the shade – perfect on a sunny summer's day.

Staff and management at the racecourse have been extremely helpful in preparing it for the day.

For anyone who isn't able to drive to the racecourse there will be free transport there and back, courtesy of Woodbine.

There is no need to book: it will run from the Warracknabeal Post Office at 7.45am.

The Rotary Club of Warracknabeal committee is grateful to the National Australia Day Council for funding to help support such a high-calibre event.
