There isn't much Ken Smale hasn't done at Warracknabeal and District Band.

He's been a director, player and president and is a life member.

And earlier this week he was recognised for 80 years of band involvement in the Wimmera.

The presentation was made by Colin Newell at the annual general meeting on behalf of the Victoria Bands' League to commemorate Mr Smale's commitment.

In accepting the award Mr Smale acknowledged the current band leaders and gave credit to a number of band members who he described as "incredibly talented".

Mr Smale laughed that even at 90, he led a busy life, but said he was hopeful of playing with the band in the future.

Band president Mr Newell said although Mr Smale's involvement and participation had dropped off in the past 12 months, he was still an active member who was well liked and respected.

Asked to describe Mr Smale, Mr Newell said he was "dedicated".

What is even more remarkable is that Mr Smale stayed an active member of the club while playing football for Collingwood in the VFL from 1955 to 1958, often rehearsing with bands in Melbourne when he couldn't make it back to practise in Warracknabeal.

Mr Newell said Mr Smale played the cornet and soprano cornet.

"Ken was an excellent player and has played in most of the bands in the Wimmera," Mr Newell said.

He said he was also an incredibly popular band member, particularly with the junior members.

"They love him," Mr Newell said.

"He would walk in and they would go get his chair and music stand.

"They would get his light and set it up.

"They had the highest of respect for him."

At the AGM certificates were also presented to the band's junior members.
