Bee loss threatens crops

THE destruction of the feral honeybee population in the wake of the varroa mite incursion into Australia looms as a major peril to crops that rely on pollination, according to a recent report from the Wheen Bee Foundation.

Although most crops in the Wimmera are not reliant on pollinators, canola is one exception and the incursion of varroa mite into Australia in 2022, along with the recent discovery of a strain resistant to chemical management, will have ripple effects on multiple sectors of agriculture.
