Hello everybody and welcome to 2025.
Today, most people believe that science has the answer for everything.
One of the consequences of this is that many people seem to have great difficulty understanding how Christians can accept the Bible based upon “faith alone”.
The thing is, they are completely wrong about this assumption.
Often, when talking to people about the Bible, one will be met with the response “Where is the
proof?”
Sadly, many Christians find it difficult to answer such a challenge.
This is unfortunate because the scientific proof is there.
It is found in many ways, ranging from the application of philosophical logic, the study of extrabiblical historical records, archaeology and many other disciplines.
Over the Christmas break, I chanced upon an older book titled 'Science Speaks' written by Dr Peter Stoner.
Dr Stoner was formerly the Chairman of the Departments of Mathematics and Astronomy at Pasadena City College, US.
In a mathematical experiment, Dr Stoner initially considered the possibility of just eight Biblical
prophecies about Jesus being fulfilled purely by chance.
Those prophecies were:
1) Micah 5:2, the coming Messiah who will be born in Bethlehem (Matt. 2:1-8; 19; Luke 2:4;
15; John 7:42)
2) Malachi 3:1, John the Baptist was the messenger the Lord had sent (John 1:29-36)
3) Zachariah 9:9, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (Matt. 21:8, Jn 12:15, Luke 19:35)
4) Zachariah 13:6, Christ was betrayed by Judas (John 20:24-28)
5) Zachariah 11:12, Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver (Matt. 6:14-16)
6) Zachariah 11:13, Judas threw the money on the ground. It was then used to buy a field (Matt.
27:3-5, 6-10)
7) Isaiah 53:7, during His trial Jesus remained silent (Mt 27:12-14; Mark 14:60-61; 15:4-5; Luke
23:8-9, John 19:8-9)
8) Psalm 22:16, Jesus was mocked on the cross (Matt 27:29, 39-44). His hands and feet were
pieced (John 20:24-28).
Dr Stoner calculated that the statistical chances of just these eight prophecies being fulfilled
purely by chance alone were staggeringly small, just 1 chance in 10 to the power of 17! He
equated this to covering the entire state of Texas in coins to a depth of 60cm and then randomly
selecting one particular marked coin with the first try.
However, Dr Stoner did not stop there.
There are over 2500 prophecies in the Bible, of which over 80 per cent have been fulfilled.
Dr Stoner then went on to include other fulfilled Bible prophecies in three groups, concerning God's formation of the universe, geographical prophecies and prophecies regarding Jesus Christ.
His final conclusion was that the statistical likelihood of all these prophecies being fulfilled
merely by chance alone was 1 chance in 1.5 x 10 to the power of 239.
Such a number is so microscopically small that it defies any understanding of its size, let alone the chances of it ever happening randomly. It could only possibly have happened deliberately, by the design and intention of God.
One does not “need faith” to believe the Bible.
When carefully examined, it is undeniable that the Bible presents overwhelming mathematical and scientific evidence of its own accuracy and truth.
In fact, it requires infinitely more “blind faith” to disbelieve the Bible than it does to believe it.
