The Dimboola community is circulating a petition, calling for a speed limit reducation for passenger vehicles and heavy vehicles in the town's shopping precinct on Lloyd Street.

What is known as the shopping precinct, the road regularly sees heavy vehicles, including B-doubles and triple road trains, semi-trailers, and earth-moving vehicles drive through the centre.

Hindmarsh Shire Council's chief executive, Monica Revell, said council officers regularly meet with representatives from the Department of Transport and Planning and have been advocating for the speed limit reduction between Wimmera and Lochiel Streets for "a number of years".

"Pedestrian safety in high-use areas is a high priority for council, including Lloyd Street, Dimboola, which is a VicRoads road," she said.

Over the last five to six years, Dimboola has witnessed a significant increase in traffic and caravans as the town is now labelled as a "destination".

This adds to the congestion on the street, which has seen near misses and potential traffic accidents.

"The Department of Transport and Planning also recently met with councillors where speed limits across the shire, particularly in our central business districts, were discussed," Ms Revell said.

She said the council will continue to advocate for the speed limit reduction.

"We welcome the community petition to support the speed reduction request," Ms Revell said.

The Department of Transport and Planning would take action on any successful outcome from the petition.

The petition can be found in shopfronts in the shopping precinct.
