The Centre for Participation is celebrating Disability Pride Month with a selection of free community events designed to connect people and promote inclusion.

Held under the theme ‘Inclusion. Belonging. Possibility.’ Disability Pride Month acknowledges the identities, cultures, and contributions of people with disabilities while providing opportunities for the community to connect and celebrate diversity.

Chief executive Robert Millar said Disability Pride Month was about celebrating the strength of the disability community and the significance of participation.

“Disability Pride is about celebrating who we are, the strength of our community, and the power of participation,” he said.

“Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the skills, achievements, and contributions of people with disabilities while bringing our community together.

“Everyone is welcome to join us throughout July, and to wear their favourite pride colours on Friday, July 31, as we celebrate at Laneway and the Wimmera Food Collective.”

This month-long program begins with an Information Day on Tuesday, July 14, at the Centre for Participation.

The wider community is invited to meet staff, learn about the Centre for Participation’s disability learning programs and pathways, and explore opportunities to get involved.

A Morning Tea and Celebration will follow on Tuesday, July 21, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Wimmera Food Collective, acknowledging the achievements of learners, volunteers, and social enterprises while connecting the community through coffee and conversation.

The month-long celebrations will end on Friday, July 31, with Disability Pride Day, when visitors can receive a free muffin with every coffee purchase at Laneway Cafe without Borders and the Wimmera Food Collective, while stocks last.

The Centre for Participation said the celebrations aim to bring the wider community together, acknowledge the contributions and achievements of individuals with disability, and reinforce its commitment to building communities where everyone belongs and has the opportunity to thrive.
