Central Park defeat Horsham Lawn in thriller

Central Park continued their unbeaten season, but were pushed by Horsham Lawn all the way in round 15 of the Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant competition on Saturday, February 21.

Central Park emerged with an 8-6 win, while in Saturday’s other fixture, St Michaels recorded their fifth victory of the season with a hard-fought 10-4 win over Kalkee.

Playing at Central Park, it was Horsham Lawn who established an early lead in the opening four doubles sets.

Lachlan Punchard and August Koch just overcame Harry Allan and Frazer Shurdington 8-7, D’Artagnan Walls and Shane McGrath defeated Matt Jones and Reece Harman 8-5, and Tahlia Thompson and Cherie Wood defeated Willow Sainsbury and Sienna Nitschke 8-0.

Adele Joseph and Victoria Brown secured Horsham Lawn’s first win of the day with a close 8-7 victory over Ella Thompson and Lydi Boyd.

Horsham Lawn maintained its lead after the singles, as each team won two sets each.

For Central Park, Matt Jones defeated D’Artagnan Walls 8-1, and Adele Joseph defeated Ella Thompson 8-0.

For Horsham Lawn, Lachlan Punchard defeated Harry Allan 8-6, and Tahlia Thompson narrowly defeated Willow Sainsbury 8-7.

But Central Park won five out of the remaining six doubles rubbers to secure yet another win.

Frazer Shurdington and Reece Harman defeated August Koch and Shane McGrath 8-6, Harry Allan and Reece Harman defeated Lachlan Punchard and Shane McGrath 8-3, Willow Sainsbury and Victoria Brown defeated Tahlia Thompson and Lydi Boyd 8-5, Matt Jones and Frazer Shurdington overcame D’Artagnan Walls and August Koch 8-7, and Adele Joseph and Sienna Nitschke defeated Ella Thompson and Cherie Wood 8-2.

For Horsham Lawn, Cherie Wood and Lydi Boyd defeated Sienna Nitschke and Victoria Brown 8-0.

At Kalkee, St Michaels got an early 3-1 lead in the opening four sets of doubles.

Mia Rees and Kassie Peachey defeated Emily Polack and Debbie Lawson 8-0, Violet McGennisken and Jess Cannane defeated Meaghan Pohlner and Ella Schultz 8-3, and Eli Bailey and Steve Schultz overcame Jeff Friberg and Luke Byrne 8-6.

For Kalkee, Jordan Friberg and Aiden Richardson defeated Archer Reading and Peter Hayes 8-4.

The four singles sets were split evenly between both teams.

For Kalkee, Jordan Friberg defeated Archer Reading 8-0, and Jeff Friberg defeated Eli Bailey 8-2.

For St Michaels, Mia Rees defeated Emily Polack 8-4, and Violet McGennisken overcame Meaghan Pohlner 8-6.

St Michaels then proceeded to win five out of the six remaining doubles sets.

Peter Hayes and Steve Schultz defeated Aiden Richardson and Luke Byrne 8-3, Eli Bailey and Peter Hayes defeated Jeff Friberg and Aiden Richardson 8-4, Kassie Peachey and Jess Cannane defeated Debbie Lawson and Ella Schultz 8-3, Mia Rees and Jess Cannane overcame Emily Polack and Ella Schultz 8-3, and Violet McGennisken and Kassie Peachey defeated Meaghan Pohlner and Debbie Lawson 8-3.

For Kalkee, Jordan Friberg and Luke Byrne defeated Archer Reading and Steve Schultz 8-6.

With one round of the pennant competition remaining, Central Park, Horsham Lawn and St Michaels have all secured a spot in the finals.

Finals for the other senior and junior grades will start on Saturday, February 28.
