Championships set for exciting final round

Warracknabeal Golf Club’s Women’s Championships are heading for an exciting finish, with all three divisions still alive before next Wednesday’s final round. Wendy Hewitt, Janice Midgley and Julie Koschitzke claimed division wins in the Wednesday daily event, which doubled as round two of the championships.

The 2026 Warracknabeal Golf Club Women’s Championships continued in great style this week, with competitors across all three divisions competing in the second round of the championship series.

Players posted some excellent scratch and nett scores as the field begins to take shape heading into the third and final round to be held next Wednesday June 3.

This round will also include the June stroke monthly medal to be sponsored by Feet First Footwear. 

In division one/A grade (0–20 handicap), Casey Phelan has emerged as the clubhouse leader after a second-round score of 86-13-73 nett, giving her a total scratch score after the second round of 178.

Wendy Hewitt is following closely behind with her second round card  91–13–78 nett.

This puts Wendy in second place with a scratch score of 179.

Leonie Atkin remains firmly in contention with a scratch score of 185 overall, while Julie Bayles is also well placed after the two rounds, finishing with a scratch score of 186. 

Division 2/B grade (21–30 handicap) is being led by Janice Midgley, whose rounds of 103-21-82 nett and 92-21-71 nett have given her the best two-round scratch aggregate of 195.

Vicki Hinkley is just behind on 199 after carding rounds of 102-24-78 nett and 97-24-73 nett, while Beth Preston has been remarkably consistent with back-to-back rounds of 102 for a 204 overall scratch.

Kaye Picken sits on a scratch of 205 after scores of 103 and 102.

Division 3/C grade (31-plus handicap) remains wide open, with Sue Krause holding the advantage after carding 105-31-74 nett and in round two 111-31-80 nett for a two-round scratch total of 216.

Leonie Saunders is close behind on 224 following rounds of 110-37-73 nett and 114-37-77 nett, while Isobel Davison and Julie Koschitzke are tied on a scratch of 237.

Isobel has recorded rounds of 118 and 119, while Julie improved significantly in round two with a 113 following her opening round of 124.

With one round still to be played, all three divisions remain very much alive and players will be looking to finish strongly in the final round of the championships.

The tee-off times will be forwarded to all players from the captain via text.

The match committee will be on office duty next week. 

Any members of the public who would like to attend will be welcome and are encouraged to come out to the golf course to follow the final round of the championships and support the players.

Eighteen line up for Wednesday stroke

A good field of 18 players took part in the Wednesday daily event at Warracknabeal Golf Club on May 27, with the day generously sponsored by Adam Schulz Plumbing.

The event was played as a stroke competition, which was part of the second round of the championships.

With beautiful weather, the day produced some excellent scoring results across all three divisions.

Division one (0–20) was won by Wendy Hewitt with a solid score of 88-14-74 nett, finishing ahead of runner-up Cindy Marsh on 96-19-77 nett. 

Division two (21–30) saw Janice Midgley take the honours playing to her handicap with 92-20-72 nett.

Runner-up was Kaye Picken on 102-29-73 nett, after a countback, from Vicki Hinkley who also carded 97-24-73 nett.

In division three (31+) Julie Koschitzke continued her good form to win with a good round of 113-41-72 nett.

Leonie Saunders was runner-up with 114-37-77 nett. 

Nearest-the-pin prizes went to Casey Phelan on the Warrack Hot Bread 5th, Janice Midgley on the Power and Bennett 7th.

Mary Massey took home the Rural Northwest Health 13th, and Julie Koschitzke won the Sue Krause third shot on the 9th.

The daily raffle from The Palace Hotel was won by Vicki Hinkley and the spinning wheel prize went to Jill Bibby.

The winners thanked Adam Schulz Plumbing for sponsoring another successful day of golf.
