Delightful day of designs and dresses

Hopetoun was well represented amongst the eighty people present last Sunday at a display of designs and wedding dresses hosted by the Southern Mallee Cooperative Parish.

Dozens of hopetoun residents in the crowd were excited to watch Phyllis McKenzie's 1958 wedding dress, worn by the model Inara, at the Wedding Dress Fashion Parade held in Rainbow on Sunday, October 5.
Dozens of hopetoun residents in the crowd were excited to watch Phyllis McKenzie's 1958 wedding dress, worn by the model Inara, at the Wedding Dress Fashion Parade held in Rainbow on Sunday, October 5.

Brainchild of Pam Clugston, who brilliantly organised it and held it at the Rainbow Church, the Parade of 23 Wedding Gowns, along with other Bridal fashions on display, surprised and delighted all present with the variety of fabrics and designs.

They included outfits from Bridesmaids to Mothers of the Bride, Flower girls and guests from the last century.

Among the dresses was a long black frock worn in 1906, loaned by Bev Fuller, of Hopetoun.

Dresses modelled included those from three generations of women from two families.

Gowns were paraded by adult models and students from Rainbow Secondary College.

Among the highlights were two generations of women in the McLean family who both wore their own Wedding Dresses, from 55 years and 22 years ago.

Adding special ambience to the occasion was the accompanying music played by Daryn Clugston, whose knowledge and range of music were appreciated and added to the joy and ambience of the occasion.

Introducing the eras, Pam created overviews of the decades, reminding all in attendance of the changes in culture, fashion, wages, music, and food, from the 1940s up to the present day.

The afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended, and over High Tea prepared by Church Members, people were able to catch up with friends from across the region, as well as make new acquaintances.

Adding to the delight of the occasion was the resulting $760 raised, which will go to a charity that supports women and children; the charity has yet to be chosen.

The Church is grateful to all who supported this special event.
