The post was made on a Facebook page by Matthew Dunnell and included photos of buildings he stated might not be abandoned yet but were on their way there.

"Last time I drove to Adelaide we stopped at Dimboola...," Mr Dunnell said.

"I'd been there a few times in the '90s when you had to go through town on the Adelaide drive and it was an ok (sic) town, but it's become Radiator Springs since they bypassed it."

The post has attracted close to 200 replies, the majority defending Dimboola and opposing Mr Dunnell's thoughts.

One commenter, John Penver, implored Mr Dunnell to do his homework.

"That town has been undergoing a revival with a lot of exciting things there over the last few years," Mr Penver wrote.

"It has a lot of new businesses, festivals, an engaged population and is a wonderful place to stay.

"A couple of older buildings does not make a dead town.

"There is a lot of civic pride there, amazing people, and they are slowly but surely preserving things, cleaning and restoring it such that it has become a real 'destination' place to visit."

Gregor Heard also disagreed, commenting that with respect, Mr Dunnell's post was far from accurate.

"I’m the next town down and Dim (Dimboola) has never been this vibrant in my memory; I’d reckon a dozen new stores over the past five years, great food, vintage shops if you’re into that, brilliant camping at the river," he wrote.

"Like Bourke Street on weekends – well worth a closer look on your way back!"

Likewise, Rob Binns defended the town, describing it as going through a "major resurgence".

"Compared to most other small towns in the region it has been developing a reputation as a destination and not just a twinkle stop as you put it," Mr Binns said.

"It has a fantastic caravan park right on the Wimmera river and a charming small but grown commercial centre with many interesting shops.

"The Imaginarium being just one worthy of visiting.

"Next time linger a little longer and explore the real charm of what Dimboola really has to offer.

"I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised."

So while Dimboola did not impress one visitor, it's clear that there are many, many more willing to stand up for the town.
