Edenhope Corella dispersal program
THE West Wimmera Shire Council will begin a corella dispersal program in Edenhope from this week as part of its corella management plan.
Scare guns will be used in the Henley Park area and near Lake Wallace and the Edenhope Lakeside Tourist Park during the late afternoon and early evening, when birds are most active before roosting.
WWSC chief executive David Bezuidenhout said large flocks could cause ongoing issues for communities.
“West Wimmera has experienced significant problems with corellas in the past,” he said.
“In large numbers, they can damage trees, create ongoing noise and can impact buildings and community infrastructure.
“Council’s management plan identifies dispersal as one of the key strategies to reduce these impacts and protect public spaces.”
Scare guns produce loud intermittent noise, which encourages birds to move on before they settle for the night.
Residents and visitors may notice loud noises during these periods, and activities will be supervised and limited to appropriate hours.
“We appreciate the community’s patience while this work is undertaken to reduce ongoing impacts on parks, facilities and surrounding areas,” he said.
