FLASHBACK: September 26 1996
A large group of enthusiastic stargazers gathered at Hopetoun Air Strip on Saturday, September 21, 1996, for the chance to view stars and planets using a superior telescope.

Ian Thompson from the Ballarat Astronomical Society told eager children that not only would they be able to view the moon and stars, but hopefully Saturn would be among the planets seen by many for the first time.
Those present were excited that during the night, they did have the chance to view the moon, stars, Saturn and Jupiter.

Children also competed in three-legged races, spoon and egg races, shoot-for-goal competitions, the fun train and chicken run.
The Hopetoun Education Centre joined forces with the Hopetoun Air Sports Committee in arranging the night, which saw 45 families brave the cold and contribute $450 towards the November Air Sports ‘96.
