Football tradition stands the test of time
Football has been part of life in the Southern Mallee for more than a century, with fierce rivalries, memorable premierships and club mergers shaping the region’s sporting history.

From the long-standing rivalry between Hopetoun and Beulah to the formation of the Southern Mallee Thunder, the region's clubs have changed significantly while staying connected to local communities.
Google Trends data shows Australian search interest in regional football has followed a recurring seasonal pattern over the past decade, with substantial increases at the start of the football season and peaks around finals.

The Hopetoun Football Club dates back to 1893, and its rival, the Blues of Beulah, has become part of regional football folklore.
The clubs met in four consecutive senior football grand finals between 1973 and 1976, with the Devils winning three times, including a commanding 127-point victory in 1973.
The fierce rivals merged in 2014 to form the Southern Mallee Giants.
The changes accelerated after the 2015 season, when the Mallee Football League folded and its five remaining clubs pursued different futures.
The Giants joined the Horsham District Football Netball League, while Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers went to the North Central FL.
Ouyen United merged with Walpeup-Underbool to form Ouyen United Kangas, joining the Sunraysia FL.
Woomelang-Lascelles folded at the end of the season, ending 64 years of history.
It was a cameo appearance for the Southern Mallee Giants in the HDFNL.
After winning back-to-back seniors premierships in 2016 and 2017, the club joined the Wimmera Football League in 2018.
When comparing the three leagues, an analysis of searches between January 2016 and September 2026 shows the WFNL recorded the highest average relative search interest, followed by NCFNL and HDFNL.
Search interest declined sharply during 2020, coinciding with the cancellation of competitions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before increasing again in 2021.

Searches for ‘Southern Mallee Giants’ surged in September 2023, when the seniors side lost the grand final to Ararat.
The Southern Mallee Thunder Football Netball Club was officially formed on October 27, 2023.
Southern Mallee Thunder was formed from two pre-existing amalgamations: the Southern Mallee Giants and Jeparit-Rainbow Storm.
Jeparit and Rainbow amalgamated in 1995, initially competing as the Lakers before adopting the Storm identity when the club joined the Horsham District Football Netball League in 2015.
Searches for ‘Southern Mallee Thunder’ first made an appearance in June 2023, and again in September at the season's conclusion.
Google Trends recorded a brief increase in relative search interest around the 2024 finals.
In its inaugural 2024 season, Southern Mallee Thunder reached the Wimmera Football Netball League senior grand final, falling nine points short against Ararat.
The result marked another chapter in a football history spanning more than a century, with the Thunder continuing the traditions of Hopetoun, Beulah, Jeparit and Rainbow under one banner.
