John said he was keen to see people turn up as he’s bought “120 snags (and) 40 or 50 hot dogs” from the local IGA along with rolls from the bakery directly opposite.

He said that, after 20 years of running his shop, the idea came to him about three years ago of “giving something back to the town” and that he was happy to give people “a free feed”.

With drinks on ice, lollies, and a free raffle, he has an offer no child could refuse.

“These teddy bears, they go out free to the kids,” he said, pointing at some nearby shelves.

“I put them all in a big box, and the kids that come past on the day, they can grab themselves a free teddy bear.”

John said he would set up the food and drink operation in the nearby alleyway “because it’s going to be hot,” and was grateful for the volunteers helping him make it happen.

With his custom-built furniture and unique knick-knacks being part of the town for an extended time now, he said he hoped the lunch would be so popular that he would end up with no sausages left.

“Because after I finish, I don’t want to see another sausage or hot dog for the next six months!” John quipped.
