Back in 1954 rock and roll music and the pop scene were just taking off and Hank Snow's 'I don't Hurt Anymore' was a jukebox favourite.

But it was 'Little Things Mean a Lot', sung by US-born singer Kitty Kallen, that took the prize for most popular hit.

Nine Horsham friends, all born that year, also know that little things mean a lot.

That's why one of the women, Shirley McMartin, gathered her friends of the same age to celebrate the event in style with a high tea at the home of Jenny Mitchell.

The group also included Leela Symes, Dianne Krelle, Margaret Raymer, Geraldine Drum, Wendy Kroker, Lyn McIntyre, Jill Jarred and Barb Barnett.

Other people born in 1954 and celebrating their 70th birthdays this year include US television talk-show host Oprah Winfrey and actors Denzel Washington and John Travolta.

And it was in 1954 that Australia was visited by the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II, the first and so far only reigning British monarch to have toured Australia.

At the time Robert Menzies was Australian Prime Minister while Winston Churchill was his counterpart in England.
