Funding preserves past: successful grant for Jeparit’s Historical Society

The Jeparit and District Historical Society has benefited from the 2026 Horsham Sports & Community Club’s sponsorship program. The Society’s application for funding of $1000 was successful.

The official presentation in Horsham on June 28 was attended by JDHS president Wendy Zanker and Treasurer Teresa Smith.

The funds will be allocated to purchasing more archival support material, essential for organising and preserving the Society’s vast collection of documentary, photographic and newspaper items.

“Archival quality boxes, envelopes and papers are essential for the preservation of vulnerable collection items - including textiles and garments – but they are also very expensive,” JDHS member and co-archivist Gaye Golder said.

“Having the funds to purchase more materials will further safeguard our collection.”

Since early 2024, JDHS has benefited significantly from generous funding from the Jeparit Township Advisory Committee, Hindmarsh Shire Council, Jeparit Anglers’ Club and Squadron Energy.

Moreover, the Robert Menzies Institute in Melbourne also funded a heritage consultant to make multiple visits to Jeparit in 2024.

JDHS has also benefited from generous donations from members and others in the community.

“It is gratifying that so many groups and people acknowledge the work we are doing at JDHS in order to preserve our documentary and photographic heritage,” JDHS member and co-archivist Debra Schumann said.

“All historical society members contribute their time, skills and enthusiasm voluntarily, but collection management materials cost, and so most societies are constantly seeking funding sources to enable the Society to remain viable,” added JDHS secretary Craige Proctor.

“We formally acknowledge the Horsham Sports & Community Club for recognising the value of the work we are doing.”
