The Jeparit and District Historical Society will be able to better preserve and share the town’s heritage after a $2328 grant from the Murra Warra Wind Farm community program.

The funding will allow the Historical Society to buy a computer and printer, enabling volunteers to create and store digital copies of photos and compile a detailed catalogue of the town's collection.

The Jeparit and District Historical Society member Craige Proctor said the upgrade was long overdue.

“The reason we lodged the application for IT is because we need to be able to create and store digital copies of photos and also to create a catalogue of the Society’s collection, which will take years, as all historical societies are constantly updating their collection catalogues,” he said.

“Currently, the Society relies on storing all photos and other records on someone’s (my) personal computer, not on site.

“Having a computer will enable us to finally document the collection to enable volunteers and ultimately the public to access that collection, so the project title is ‘Collection Management’.”

Mr Proctor said interest in the Society’s work had grown, with more members joining and giving financial donations to the Society.

“We have had a surge in memberships which reflects the level of interest not only locally but far afield, including people who left Jeparit in the past but who have an appreciation of the district’s heritage and who wish to support the Society,” he said.

“This is also being reflected in several generous financial donations to the Society for it to carry out its work.”

Murra Warra Wind Farm has allocated more than $103,000 in community grants to not-for-profit and community groups across the Horsham, Yarriambiack and Hindmarsh Shires this year.

There were 17 different projects funded through this year’s program, spanning across five categories: Education and Training, Sustainable Environment, Culture, Diversity and Arts, Sport and Recreation and Social, Health and Well-being.
