Blue Ribbon Raceway is marking 30 years of speedway history this week, celebrating the track that grew from a local dream into one of the region’s premier racing venues.

Right from the start, it was always a dream of the Horsham Motor Sports Club to have its own race track, and attempts were made during the 1970s to achieve this, but at the time, there was not enough local money or support available for it to happen.

Almost two decades later, a home for racing was back on the schedule and the club clicked into fundraising gear, with bottle drives and cake stalls providing the intitial $10,000.

Four years later, a site was chosen on farming land belonging to Laurie Smith of Kalkee.

In 1995 the first earthworks began, and not even a year after that the first meeting was held.

Alan Jones, the then president of the Victorian Speedway Council, officially opened Blue Ribbon Raceway on May 27 1996, with basic facilities like a canteen in a tent and portable toilets.

These were later upgraded, along with lighting at the track.

In the past 12 months, a junior quarter midget track has been constructed on the infield, and affectionally known as "Mini Blue Ribbon Raceway" this has been hugely popular, already hosting multiple races.

Over the years, Blue Ribbon Raceway has held a number of big events, including the World Series Sprintcars in 1998, considered the pinnacle of racing.

The club also hosted the modified sedans 2017-18 national title, along with a plethora of state titles, including but not limited to production sedans (2015 and 2025) and wingless sprints (2025).

Two more titles will be added this week, with the staging of the Victorian street stock title and the 1200 junior Victorian title.

Anniversary celebrations kick off on Friday, March 13, with a dinner to be held at Blue Ribbon Raceway.

It will include a car display and historic memorabilia, along with live music.
