Construction progresses on the new affordable housing unit in Hopetoun, set for completion by June 2026.

The Hopetoun build forms part of Yarriambiack Shire Council’s major housing initiative, which has already seen six out of seven units completed across the region, including two in Murtoa, two in Woomelang, one in Warracknabeal and one in Rupanyup.

Mayor Kylie Zanker said the project has realised the Council’s vision to create more housing choices for older residents looking to downsize.

“The funding has allowed the realisation of the Council’s vision to offer alternative housing options for our older residents,” she said.

“These homes cater specifically to the needs of the aging population, providing low-maintenance, comfortable living spaces close to community amenities.”

The $2.8 million program, funded through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (Round 2, 2022), aims to increase the availability of smaller, energy-efficient homes while freeing up larger houses for families relocating to the Shire.

Council chief executive Tammy Smith said the initiative is already helping to improve housing diversity and population growth.

“The units are built to provide options for our older residents who wish to downsize, freeing up larger housing stock within our Shire,” she said.

“This then provides opportunities for families to move to our community.”

Under a 50-year lease agreement, Dunmunkle Lodge manages the units in Murtoa, Warracknabeal, Rupanyup, and Hopetoun, appointing tenants and overseeing ongoing operations.

The organisation is also expanding its own housing projects in Murtoa, with interested residents encouraged to register directly with Dunmunkle Lodge.

Cr Zanker said the partnership between the State Government, Council, and Dunmunkle Lodge demonstrates the value of collaboration.

“This initiative shows what’s possible when local and state government work hand-in-hand with trusted community organisations,” she said.
