Horsham Golf, Coughlin Park play out opening round thriller
The opening round of the Wimmera pennant lawn bowls competition was played over the weekend, with Horsham City, Sunnyside, Horsham Golf and Kaniva emerging victorious in division one games.
In the game of the round, Horsham Golf managed to hold off Coughlin Park to carve out a 76-75 win.
After the rink one teams played out a 20-20 draw, Coughlin Park’s third rink team recorded a 32-29 victory before rink two, the last out of the three games to finish, saw Horsham Golf close out 27-23 winners.
Horsham City reversed the result of last season’s grand final to defeat Nhill 72-52.
Despite playing away, the Horsham side dominated rinks one (28-9) and two (25-17), with Nhill’s third-rink team narrowing the overall margin with their 26-19 win.
Also playing away, Dimboola’s first-rink team proved too strong for Sunnyside but the home side outplayed the visitors in rinks two and three, winning 26-16 and 31-8, respectively, to record a 72-51 overall win.
At Kaniva on Sunday, the home side won two out of the three rinks to defeat Goroke-Edenhope 79-70
In division two action, Coughlin Park won all three rinks to defeat Horsham City 92-68, Horsham Golf beat Natimuk 82-49, Sunnyside overcame Dimboola 83-61 at home and Nhill accounted for Goroke-Edenhope 103-42 in their Sunday matchup.
Division three saw Nhill 3 defeat Nhill 4, winning all rinks; Coughlin Park proved too strong for Sunnyside, winning 66-45; Kaniva defeated Horsham City 60-50, and in an almost repeat of the division one outcome, Horsham Golf won by one shot, with a 21-10 rink-two win proving pivotal in the overall 55-54 victory.
