Horsham Lawn, Central Park roll on

The second round of the Central Wimmera Tennis Association senior tennis took place last week, with Horsham Lawn and Central Park again producing wins in the pennant competition.

Playing at home, Horsham Lawn won several close encounters throughout the day before eventually finishing with an 11-3 win over St Michaels. 

Lawn struck early in the opening four games of doubles, where Lachlan Punchard and Graeme Wood overcame Peter Hayes and Nick Robertson 8-7, Tahlia Thompson and Lydi Boyd defeated Mia Rees and Kassie Peachey 8-6 and Dylan Thompson and Joel Boyd beat Chris Ellis and fill-in Jake Maher 8-4, before Ella and Paige Thompson’s 8-2 win over Violet McGennisken and Ayva Robertson gave the home side a 4-0 early lead. 

Peter Hayes produced St Michaels' first set win of the day in his singles rubber as he beat Lachlan Punchard 8-5. 

But Horsham Lawn prevailed in the remaining singles matches; Dylan Thompson defeated Jake Maher 8-6, Tahlia Thompson beat Mia Rees 8-6, and Ella Thompson defeated Violet McGennisken 8-5. 

Following the singles, Graeme Wood and Joel Boyd defeated Nick Robertson and Chris Ellis 8-2 to claim victory. 

St Michaels produced two more wins in the remaining rubbers as Kassie Peachey and Ayva Robertson defeated Lydi Boyd and Paige Thompson 8-5 while Peter Hayes and Chirs Ellis beat Lachland Punchard and Joel Boyd 8-4. 

Horsham Lawn won the last three rubbers, as Tahlia and Paige Thompson beat Mia Rees and Ayva Robetson 8-2, Dylan Thompson and Graeme Wood defeated Jake Maher and Nick Robertson 8-1, before Ella Thompson and Lydi Boyd comfortably beat Violet McKennisken and Kassie Peachey 8-2.

At Central Park, the home side comfortably defeated Kalkee 11-3. 

Kalkee’s Jeff Friberg and Grant Schultz produced the first win as they defeated Central Park’s Harry Allan and Reece Harman 8-5. 

But Central Park was too strong in the other early doubles matchups, as Willow Sainsbury and Tara McIntyre beat Anna Exell and Debbie Lawson 8-4, Frazer Shurdington and Shaun Alexander beat Aiden Richardson and Luke Byrne 8-3, and Eve Wear and fill-in Macey Mayberry defeated Meaghan Pohlner and Amelia Friberg 8-5. 

Central Park extended their momentum in the singles.

Harry Allan beat Jeff Friberg 8-4, Frazer Shurdington beat Aiden Richardson 8-5, Willow Sainsbury beat Anna Exell 8-1, and Eve Wear beat Meaghan Pohlner 8-0 to give Park a 7-1 lead.

Central Park won four of the remaining six sets as Reece Harman and Shaun Alexander overcame Grant Schultz and Luke Byrne in a 8-7 thriller, Tara McIntyre and Macey Mayberry beat Debbie Lawson and Amelia Friberg 8-0, Harry Allan and Shaun Alexander beat Jeff Friberg and Luke Byrne 8-5, and Willow Sainsbury and Macey Mayberry defeated Anna Exell and Amelia Friberg 8-2. 

For Kalkee, Aiden Richardson and Grant Schultz beat Frazer Shurdington and Reece Harman 8-7, and Meaghan Pohlner and Debbie Lawson defeated Eve Wear and Tara McIntyre 8-3 to finish with three set wins. 

In other senior highlights, Horsham Lawn O’Connor just overcame Natimuk 8-6 in A special as just five games separated the two teams, and Horsham Lawn Ahern and Haven Red were all level in sets won (6-6), with Ahern getting the win via games won. 

The junior season commenced last week, with Horsham Lawn and Central Park getting things underway with Wednesday afternoon tennis in the junior open division.
