Horsham Lawn overcome St Michaels
Horsham Lawn made it two victories in a row after they defeated St. Michaels in round 14 of the Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant competition on Saturday, February 14.
Playing at home, Horsham Lawn won 10-4, while in the other pennant fixture, Central Park defeated Kalkee 13-1.
The first four doubles games saw Horsham Lawn take an early 3-1 set lead, as Jae McGrath and D’Artagnan Walls defeated Eli Bailey and Peter Hayes 8-6, Ella and Tahlia Thompson overcame Mia Rees and Jess Cannane 8-6, and Lydi Boyd and Cherie Wood defeated Daniella Gillespie and Barb Crough 8-5.
For St Michaels, Steve Schultz and Nick Robertson edged out August Koch and Lachlan Punchard 8-7.
Horsham Lawn proceeded to extend their lead in the doubles fixtures, as Jae McGrath defeated Eli Bailey 8-3, Ella Thompson defeated Mia Rees 8-5, and Lydi Boyd defeated Daniella Gillespie, while St Michaels’ Steve Schultz defeated August Koch 8-3.
The home side then won four out of the final six sets of doubles.
For Horsham Lawn, D’Artagnan Walls, and Lachlan Punchard defeated Peter Hayes and Nick Robertson 8-6, Tahlia Thompson and Cherie Wood defeated Jess Cannane and Barb Crough 8-3, Ella Thompson and Cherie Wood defeated Mia Rees and Barb Crough 8-3, while Lydi Boyd and Tahlia Thompson won an 8-7 thriller against Daniella Gillespie and Jess Cannane.
For St Michaels, Eli Bailey and Nick Robertson defeated Jae McGrath and Lachlan Punchard 8-6, and Steve Schultz and Peter Hayes overcame August Koch and D’Artagnan Walls 8-7.
With Meaghan Pohlner stepping in to play the men’s doubles for Kalkee, the visitors fought valiantly in their loss to Central Park.
The opening four doubles games saw Harry Allan and Reece Harman narrowly overcome Jeff Friberg and Luke Byrne 8-7, Frazer Shurdington and Brendan Nitschke defeated Aiden Richardson and Meaghan Pohlner 8-1, and Adele Joseph and Tara McIntyre defeated Keeley and Ella Schultz 8-1.
In the singles, Jeff Friberg recorded Kalkee’s solitary win of the day as he overcame Harry Allan 8-6.
In the other singles sets, Frazer Shurdington defeated Aiden Richardson 8-0, Willow Sainsbury defeated Emily Polack 8-2, and Adele Joseph defeated Keeley Schultz 8-1.
Central Park then won the final six doubles sets.
Reece Harman and Brendan Nitschke defeated Luke Byrne and Meaghan Pohlner 8-5; Sienna Nitschke and Tara McIntyre defeated Debbie Lawson and Ella Schults 8-0; Harry Allan and Brendan Nitschke defeated Jeff Friberg and Meaghan Pohlner 8-3; Willow Sainsbury and Tara McIntyre overcame Emily Polack and Ella Schultz 8-5; Frazer Shurdington and Reece Harman defeated Aiden Richardson and Luke Byrne 8-3.
