Inclusive footy in Ararat unites region

On Saturday July 27, round 5 of the FIDA Western Conference brought spirited football, sportsmanship and community connection to Alexandra Oval in Ararat as part of the Blue Ribbon Foundation Spirit of Sport Round – a special event recognising the legacy of Victoria Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Wimmera Whippets, Grampians Giants and South Warrnambool Roosters took to the field in three dynamic matches filled with determination, teamwork and excitement.

With the Whippets short on players it was great to see Giant and Roosters players put their hands up to play for the Whippets, ensuring a fair game could go ahead.

The Giants proved too strong early on, keeping the scoreboard ticking with goals to Matt Joy and Hannah Slorach.

The Whippets showcased strong ball control and Chelsea O’Connor scored with confidence, ending the day on a high despite the scoreboard margin.

Both teams displayed great teamwork.

struggled to convert opportunities.

In the true spirit of the day, the Roosters allowed two of the Victoria Police umpires to play for the Whippets in the second half.

Despite the scoreboard, the spirit remained high with strong support from the sidelines and plenty of encouragement for the players.

In a tightly contested final match, the Giants edged out the Roosters by just six points.

Both sides showed great determination, with strong defensive efforts keeping the scores low.

The Giants held their structure under pressure and walked away with a hard-fought win in what was a true reflection of the spirit and competitiveness of the day.

Both teams will now face off in the grand final, to be held in Warrnambool on Sunday August 10.

The day was more than just footy, it was a moment to reflect and honour the service of Victoria Police members through the support of the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

The teams played with the kind of sportsmanship that defines the FIDA spirit.

Spirit of Sport awards were presented to Whippets player Alfred Muller, Giants player Charlie Blake, Roosters player Fred Knowles and Giants volunteer Josh Perry.
