The hosts secured four crucial points in the opening round of the Horsham under-15s Country Week, defeating Wimmera-Mallee by 73.

Round one was shortened from a 50-over game to a T20 following early morning rain, meaning every run and wicket at the Minyip Recreation Reserve was vital.

Horsham Tigers junior Callum Jackson made the most of his time at the crease, hitting 46 runs off 40 deliveries with five fours and a six.

"I'm stoked because my highest score before today was 39," the young allrounder said.

"I'm happy to get to 40 because I've gone out twice in a row at 39.

"I know it wasn't a half-century, but I'm happy to help the side where I can."

Jackson's 46 and a late-innings cameo by Hugh Miller (24* off 13) helped Horsham make 6/144.

Feeling a little tight in the hamstrings, Jackson didn't need to bowl; however, he did take a catch to give Archie Knight his fourth wicket of the game.

Knight finished with 4/14 off four overs and was the pick of the bowlers, with Anderson Brown (1/11 off four) and Dane Paech (2/10 off two) restricting the visitors to 6/71.

The win put HCA in second position after round one, with HDCA Hurricanes Gold in first after defeating HDCA Hurricanes Green by 101 runs.

Mount Gambier chased down South West's score within 14 overs, while the Warrnambool derby was abandoned due to rain.
