Kalkee host rising Kaniva Leeor
Kalkee’s men’s senior football team will aim to pull off an upset when they host Kaniva Leeor United this Saturday in round 17 of the Horsham District Football Netball League.
Last week’s loss to the Swifts – their fourth straight loss – saw the Kees move down to eighth on the ladder.
But Kalkee coach Andy Devereaux has previously spoken about his young side embracing the challenge of going against quality sides.
Helping Kalkee’s case this Saturday are the strong starts they’ve had in their previous three games and the knowledge they led Kaniva Leeor most of the way in their round six clash before narrowly losing 94-90.
However, Kaniva Leeor have been one of the competition’s best sides since that matchup, boasting a 7-2 record in their last nine games, which included a surprise win over league leaders Noradjuha Quantong.
The Cougars are currently in fifth place on the ladder, and with a challenging final-round clash against Harrow Balmoral, a victory over Kalkee feels necessary to bolster their finals chances.
Speaking prior to their round 16 bye, Kaniva Leeor coach Jonno Hicks acknowledged the threat Kalkee posed to their finals chances.
“We've got to take care of Kalkee – it's not really an easy run for us home,” Hicks said.
“We only just beat Kalkee last time and they are a danger team just outside the five.
“They haven’t lost by much to some of those top sides.”
