Leisure Centre repairs set for completion by June
Yarriambiack Shire Council and facility user groups have agreed to replace the entire timber floor across both basketball courts in Warracknabeal Leisure Centre, pushing the project’s completion to early June 2025.

The decision follows concerns raised by the building contractor in December 2024, about level disparities between the existing court and the planned new surface.
After identifying potential issues with the original repair plan, the contractor presented several solutions to the council in late January 2025.
Yarriambiack Shire Council manager community health, Tim Rose said the council staff met with facility user groups to review the options.
“The following day, council staff met with user groups of the facility and discussed the available options presented by the builder,” he said.
“A collaborative decision was made to replace the entire timber floor surface across both basketball courts, removing any concerns relating to differences in floor levels between the new and existing court surfaces.”
A burst water pipe under the canteen originally caused the damage, severely affecting the floor’s footings and stumps and sinking sections of the foyer and western basketball court.
The initial repair plan focused on replacing only the affected areas, but the new plan now includes the eastern court to ensure a consistent playing surface.
After receiving confirmation from the insurer, the council initially expected to complete the repairs by March 3, 2025.
However, the expanded scope of works has extended the timeline, but council and facility user groups believe the complete floor replacement will create a better playing surface and benefit the community in the long run.
