The Lions Club of Horsham is inviting the community to take a step back in time with the opening of a Time Capsule.

Held on Monday, January 27, at Lions Park on Barnes Boulevard from 11am, the milestone event will feature 25-year-old letters from community members.

"When we open the Capsule, we will distribute its contents to the authors of the resealing their owners or family member," Lions president Jeff Both said.

"The public is once again invited to write letters to future family members for re-sealing into the Capsule, currently planned for February 28, 2025."

The Time Capsule, originally a project of Horsham's former Leo Club in 1976, was created to raise funds for improvements to the Wimmera River.

Crafted from a former sealed mine and designed by Peter Creek to resemble a globe, the capsule weighs 1.5 tonnes and was built by T.J. Pohlner Engineering.

The capsule was first filled with over 300 letters in 1977 under the stewardship of then-mayor Brian Brooke, who also contributed a letter.

It was again opened in 2000 by then-Mayor Bernie Dunn, where more than 400 people gathered to watch letters distributed to their recipients.

It was then resealed in 2001 by the then mayor Bernard Gross.

As part of the capsule's legacy, the Lions Club is encouraging Horsham residents to contribute letters addressed to future family members or loved ones.

"We are asking the Horsham community to contribute to filling the capsule with letters," Mr Both said.

This unique tradition offers a chance to connect past, present, and future generations.
