Lions open community grant scheme

The Dimboola Lions Club has hosted the Container Deposit Scheme’s (CDS) reverse vending machine, generating funds through the CDS program, and is keen to see these funds distributed to organisation and activities within the Dimboola community.

The first round of an ongoing community grant scheme is being launched, with applications to open on Friday September 20 and close on Friday October 26.

The Dimboola Lions plan to announce the recipients of the first round of funding at the November 9 Tower Park Market.

The funding scheme is aimed at assisting community groups initiate projects that will provide tangible benefits for the community, and must have the following:

1. A direct benefit for the Dimboola Community;

2. Identify specific environmental, social or economic benefits;

3. The benefit must go beyond the usual business of the group;

4. There must be tangible recognition of the Dimboola Lions Club contribution;

The first round of funding will be for a total of $10,000, and it is anticipated there will be at least two rounds per year.

Applicants can apply for any amount of money within the $10,000.

“Generating income from the Container Deposit Scheme has provided the Dimboola Lions Club with a new stream of funding,” Dimboola Lions Club president Rod McKenzie said.

“It is important that we ensure those funds support projects that benefit the Dimboola community.”

Mr McKenzie said the release of the funds will be a celebration to mark the first year of the CDS program, as well as being an opportunity to show the community the variety of activities that are undertaken by the Lions Club and local volunteers.

These activities include hosting the CDS, collecting and baling cardboard, paper collection, Bulka bag collection, scrap metal collection, Lochiel Driver Reviver, coolroom and barbecue hire.

The Dimboola Lions Club is also keen to attract more members and volunteers to undertake these activities.

“Manning the CDS reverse vending machine seven days a week requires volunteers who are prepared to assist customers when required, keep the machine clean, change over bins and deal with any faults that occur,” Mr McKenzie said.

Community groups can apply for funding by contacting La Vergne Lehmann by email lavergne.lehmann@hotmail.com for a grant application, or on 0408 121 118 for more information.
