Association play

May 12 was the final day of the Wimmera Croquet Association autumn competition in Horsham after a five-week round robin.

The four bottom teams played in two closely fought matches, while the premiers were decided in a surprisingly one-sided match between to two top teams.

Yellow, featuring Dimboola’s Judy Baker and Betty Bartlett, won by three hoops over Green, 3 games 38 hoops to 3 games 35 hoops.

This lifted them into third place.

Green’s Charles Rees came good in the last game to have a 7 to 5 win, but it was too little too late.

John Moar led the Red team to a similar narrow victory of 3 games 35 hoops to 3 games 32 hoops over Pink.

Jan Post’s 7 to 3 win in the final game wasn’t quite enough to get Pink over the line.

The big match of the day was between top-placed White against Blue, who were in second spot.

Blue needed a big win to take the premiership and they produced possibly the best performance of the season to score a convincing 5 games to 1 victory.

Leanne Combrink started the day with a narrow loss but won the next two games to help the Blue team gain a victory.

Christine Hiscock playing for White had a rare day without a victory.

This sees the end of the competitive season as clubs revert to a lower key social program over the cooler months.
