Man arrested over alleged $700,000 NDIS fraud
A man from the Horsham area has been arrested after he allegedly defrauded the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) of around $700,000 over two years.
Hamilton Crime Investigation Unit detectives and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) launched a joint investigation after the man allegedly defrauded his NDIS plan between June 28, 2024 and June 30, 2026.
“Our team worked extensively on this investigation to stop this person from allegedly defrauding a scheme designed to support some of the most vulnerable members of our community for his own financial gain,” Hamilton Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark James said.
“Victoria Police and the NDIA are committed to identifying and holding accountable anyone who seeks to profit through dishonest NDIS claims.”
Investigators allege the man, an NDIS participant, established two businesses to facilitate the fraud.
It’s alleged the man submitted false invoices for services he claimed to have received and diverted the funds to his bank accounts.
Detectives also allege the man dealt with property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.
On Wednesday, August 26, a search warrant was executed at a residential property in the Horsham area, and a 48-year-old man was taken into custody.
He will be interviewed in relation to the incidents.
“The vast majority of NDIS participants and providers do the right thing and use Scheme funding appropriately,” an NDIA spokesperson said.
“We will continue to use intelligence, data analytics and joint investigations to identify, detect and disrupt fraud, so NDIS funding is protected for the Australians who rely on it.”
