The onfield success can often hinge on the nickname and club colours.

Think West Coast Eagles' iconic yellow and blue in the 1986 and then Fremantle Dockers' questionable purple, green, read and white a decade later.

Locally, there's no shortage of rebranding opportunities after clubs merge.

After spending countless hours planning and surveying, many clubs get the nickname, colours and branding correct.

In 2001, the Brim Eagles and the Warracknabeal Lions merged to form the Warrack Eagles.

A simple 50/50 join of one club's history with another.

Fortunately, the merging committee did not have one Mail-Times' staff present, who suggested this week the club should have been called the Griffins.

A mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, a Griffin isn't an animal commonly associated with sporting clubs.

The Man in the Corner thinks the Warrack Eagles chose wisely.
