Murtoa Men's Shed receives equipment boost
The Murtoa Men’s Shed is one of 31 community groups across Victoria to benefit from the Victorian government’s latest round of Men’s Shed grants, receiving around $2000 to purchase new tools and equipment.
The $860,000 program, announced by Minister for Carers and Volunteers Ros Spence, supports sheds to build new spaces, upgrade facilities, and purchase equipment that helps locals connect, share skills, and contribute to their communities.
Murtoa Men’s Shed president Don Laskey said the grant will make a significant difference for their group, which comprises about a dozen active members.
“It’ll be a lot of help for us to do these certain jobs,” he said.
“We’re buying some hammers, saws, bench tools and other gear we need to get things done.”
Mr Laskey said members take pride in producing practical pieces for the town.
“We’ve done a lot of seats around the lakes and made frames, posts and billboard things people want,” he said.
“It’s all handy for the town and makes it worthwhile when you see people using what we’ve built.”
The shed received $1994.90 through this round and is the only one in the Wimmera region to receive the funding.
The shed has remained busy throughout the winter, producing kindling wood and fulfilling community orders.
“That’s been keeping us very busy lately,” he said.
“We just hope it keeps going the way it’s going so we can build bigger and better.”
He said that while new members are always welcome, the shed is thriving with a strong team.
“We’ve got plenty of blokes and we’re as happy as happy.”
