Congratulations to our surrounds staff who spent all day Thursday working on the green and surrounds, cl\ 1b house and the veranda area. It looked a treat and was noticed by all who played. To the ladies also in the clubhouse.

Major sponsor, the Warrnambool Bowls Club, with local businesses in Barry Holland Motors and Wimmera Bakery of Dimboola, provided the means of a competition not played by any other club in the district.

Teams from across the North Central, North Wimmera and Wimmera areas who had a win were money recipients for the day, with the winners and runners up also collecting monetary prizes. The format gives all teams a chance to take home a monetary prize right up to the last game.

$1110 in cash was handed out to the lucky participants who shone, with most teams having at least one win. St Arnaud and St Arnaud Country Club, Donald Golf, Sunny Side, Coughlin Park, Minyip, Murtoa, Beulah, and Warracknabeal Bowling Clubs were in for the glory of a collect.

The winners of the $360 first prize came from Murtoa Bowls Club with skipper Calvin Pendlebury, Toppa Brown and Brian (Bones) Hamilton on three wins 92 points. They also won $90.00 for the three wins.

Runners up combined well to have three wins 89 points, being Sunnyside Bowls Club of Dale McRae, Rod Scurrie and Lane Hyde. An unlucky close third went to Brian Taylor, Brian Gunn and Gary McLean 88 point, also on three wins.

A big surprise was that after the top three teams, no two game winners of the remaining 11 teams were had on the day. Unheard of in a close competition.

Nine of them had one win and collected $30.00 each, with two teams not being able to have a collect.

Match Committee Chairman Wayne Gove provided a neat and tidy results sheet and was pleased with the way the day went, plus his work as event organiser was highly witnessed, helped by his match committee.

The Golf ladies, headed by Lorraine Penny, provided a lovely lunch and afternoon tea for the 42 bowlers, with the daily raffle comprising of various items donated by our local business which the club appreciates, making the prizes an added bonus to the day.

Thanks to our social committee led by Alison Fischer on the organization of the raffle. Bar staff were essential on the day with Dawn Walton, Alison Fischer and Christine Gunn showing their bar skills to the thirsty crowd.

A mention was made by trophy recipients as to the popularity of this event, hoping to keep it going for years to come.

WINTER COMP START AT GOLF

Golf also started their Winter Bowls season for them at home on Tuesday, with 10 pair fronting up in what was a beautiful day for any sport.

The winners came from Beulah, cementing three good wins and the raffle winner also. Alan Edmonds and Ray Turner performed well together to secure 79 points, with Ray drawing out Alan’s name to win the raffle as well.

Runners up went to last week’s winners at Warrack, Deb Barling and Mick Marchment also three wins and 76.5 points. Two gamers, Chris O’Connell, Brian Taylor, Brian Gunn and partner Bruce Wilson and Jing Robertson and Graeme Shalders were close behind in an even competition.

Rainbow pair P. Harkness and A. Sluggett enjoyed the day along with Deb Treadwell and Robyn Bellinger from Hopetoun. Locals Mary Ginnane and Sal McKenzie just missing out on a win, whilst Isobel Davison and Graeme White went away with a win and two losses.

Veteran Ian Hewitt and partner Simon Cousins from Warracknabeal Bowls had a mixed day on success with a draw a win and a loss, but still very competitive.

Next week is back at Warracknabeal, with Beulah and Hopetoun advising of their winter events to alternate on Sundays, draw for partners, starting at Beulah this Sunday. Contact Alan Edmonds or the clubs for entry or info.

Presentation night at the club starts 6pm tonight, with the AGM looming quickly.

Good bowling and good luck.
