National Volunteer Week: Bombers run with Wes

If you attend any Noradjuha Quantong Football Netball Club fixture, you’ll be sure to have seen Wes Howard. A life member of the club, Wes has been a critical part of the club’s football sides for over a decade, ensuring players stay hydrated by filling water bottles and often offering the group words of encouragement at training or on game day.

Bombers senior football coach Damian Cameron said Wes is an unheralded but crucial part of the club.

“Since I joined the club five or six years ago, his face was already here, and you learn pretty quick how much he does around the joint and how much the boys get around him,” Mr Cameron said.

“He just loves his job more than anything, so I think that's the most important part.

“You won't come to a training session or a game day when he's not here, chipping in and getting around the boys.

“He's always in on the pre-game features and the song afterwards as well.”

Wes outlined what he does on a typical week with the club.

“I’ll fill up the drink bottles at every training and on game days,” Mr Howard said.

“On Saturdays, I’ll try and rev up the boys, including the under-17s and under-14s teams, and sing the team song with the boys when we get a win.”

Perhaps Wes’s greatest contribution is the dim sims he cooks for the senior players on Tuesday night trainings, something Cameron said the boys appreciate greatly.

“On Tuesday nights, he always provides us with steamed dim sims too,” Mr Cameron said

“So that's really good for us, we love that.”
