New Wimmera Mallee News journalists Madeleine Funcke (left) and Natalie Anderson joined the editorial team on June 1, bringing a passion for storytelling and community journalism.

The pair come from different backgrounds but share a common goal: telling stories that matter to regional communities.

A Melbourne native and recent RMIT University journalism graduate, Natalie transitioned from broadcast to print media.

She has noted that the transition from broadcast journalism to print has deepened her love for writing.

“I adore writing and storytelling,” Ms Anderson said.

“I find pleasure in writing a new story or getting an interview done. It gives me a rush of adrenaline.”

Madeleine, local to Minyip, graduated from high school last year.

Her strong interest in Australian military history matches her enthusiasm for research and writing.

"My passion for history and local stories runs deep in my writing," Ms Funcke said.

"It's enriching to showcase and commemorate local history, as it is often overlooked or left unknown."

"I am delighted to be in this position."

The appointments reflect the Wimmera Mallee News' ongoing commitment to developing emerging journalists and investing in local news coverage.

Editor Ben Fraser said the appointments were an exciting step for the newsroom and for local journalism across the region.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Natalie and Madeleine to the Wimmera Mallee News team,” he said.

“Both bring enthusiasm, curiosity, and a strong commitment to reporting stories that are important to local communities.

“Regional journalism depends on individuals who listen, ask questions, and seek to understand the communities they serve.

“We’re looking forward to supporting Natalie and Madeleine as they develop their skills and become familiar faces across the Wimmera and Mallee.”
