Nhill defeat Horsham Golf in thriller to make grand final
Nhill will face Horsham City in the Division One Wimmera Playing Area Lawn Bowls Pennant grand final following a thrilling four-shot win over Horsham Golf at Coughlin Park on Saturday, February 22.
Due to temperatures hitting 38 degrees during the middle stages of the day, the grand final started at 9:30 am and was a thrilling contest on the greens.
Despite losing two rinks, Nhill won 72-68, primarily thanks to rink one, which was skippered by Allan King and featured Ivan Reichelt, Russell Dunlop and Ray Olney. They won 30-17 over the Horsham Golf rink skippered by Gavin Walter, featuring Graeme O'Connor, Denis Ballinger and Hayden Tucker.
Nhill's rink two, skippered by Kevin Jones, featuring Brad Blackwood, Barry Morrison and Roger Brown, lost 21-26 to the Horsham City rink featuring Chris Mellor, Stephen Harris, Bradley Robinson and skipper Ashley Batchelor.
Nhill's rink three, skippered by Darren Gebert, featuring Greg Ryan, Terry Robins and Ryder Byrnes, lost 21-25 to the Horsham City rink featuring Robert Grieger, Ken McClelland, Danny Schmidt and skipper Geoffrey Bald.
In division two, Nhill will face Coughlin Park in the grand final following a comfortable 90-48 win over Horsham Golf, winning all three rinks.
The thrilling rink was rink two, skippered by Larry Bywaters and featuring Michelle Robins, Barry Cramer and Bob Schneider. They won 23-22 over Horsham Golf's rink, skippered by Dennis Pye, featuring Russell Smith, Don Connors and Trevor Ough.
Nhill's rink one, skippered by Philip Henseleit, featuring Pam Cramer, Daryl Leyonhjelm and Barry Schultz, won 31-17 over Golf's rink, skippered by Heath Miller, featuring Adam Galpin, Raymond Gilmartin and Craig Bennett.
Nhill's rink three secured the day's biggest win, 36-9. Their rink was skippered by Colin Alexander and featured Jeff Fritsch, Matthew Morrison and Shaun McDonald. Horsham Golf's rink was skippered by Darryl Phillips and featured Kevin Walsh, Graeme Deleeuw and Craig Turvey.
In division three, Coughlin Park will face Nhill in the grand final following a 68-49 win over Horsham Golf.
They won all three rinks, with the thriller coming from rink two, who won 18-16. Judy Bryan skippered that rink, which featured Faye Anderson, Raymond Watson, and Linda Thompson. Horsham Golf's rink was skippered by John Mulquiny and featured Marty Montgomery, Jack Walter and Ian Jackson.
Rink three, skippered by Colin Weir, featuring Veronica Muller, Ralph Chequer and John McDonald, won 25-18 over Golf's rink featuring Ross Barnett, David Landwehr, Kenneth Dix and Margaret Smith.
Rink three, skippered by Stephen Schorback, featuring Mark Schumann, Beverly Phillips and Graeme Bryan won 25-15 over the rink skippered by Tim Barber, featuring Michael John, Neville McDonald and Peter Broadbear.
