She grew up with her four siblings on a farm in Yaapeet. Her father was excited about the birth of a daughter after four sons, and to celebrate, he bought a new Dodge car - a big step up from the horse and buggy.

Dorothy's father passed away when she was 18 months old.

In 1937 she left school at age 13, and stayed to help her mother at home.

Due to the war, there was shortage of teachers, so Dorothy was appointed as sewing mistress and taught lessons at the Yaapeet Primary School.

She married Mack Gosling in 1951 after a courtship.

Starting married life on the farm at Nypo, they were blessed with daughters Gai, Jill and Wendy.

They remained on the farm until 1958 and then moved to Geelong.

Due to difficulty finding work, the family returned to Rainbow, purchasing a menswear store.

Mack died suddenly in 1975 and Dorothy remained in Rainbow until 2002, when she moved to Nhill.

In 2016 she moved into Avonlea due to her eyesight failing.

Dorothy was involved in church life and the community.

She loved arranging flowers, art, crafts and gardening, along with crocheting and knitting and one of her great joys was being involved in the Christmas exhibition at Nhill and Rainbow.

Dorothy also took a great interest in all aspects of her family life.

Dorothy passed away on October 3, 2024 and her funeral was held at the Lutheran Church in Nhill on October 14.

She was then buried at the cemetery in Rainbow with her husband Mack.

* We have been featuring snippets of a book about Dorothy Gosling's life in The Argus, and with her family's permission, are able to do so in the future.
