Playing out the old year

Whimsical Tricycle will be among local performers showcased this year in A Day by the Lake, the traditional New Year's Eve festivity at Lake Marna at Murtoa.

"In just a few short years A Day by the Lake has become a popular place to ring in the new year and listen to some fine live music in an idyllic setting in a small rural town just a short drive from Horsham," one half of the Tricycle duo, Kieran Butler, said.

"This free event began by showcasing local musicians, including Whimsical Tricycle."

The first event, in 2022, made such an impression on Butler and his partner Michelle that they moved to Murtoa after that visit.

Other Wimmera acts that have performed in the past include Brett Schmidt, TB Whiteside and Danielle Simonsen.

"The 2024 line-up welcomes back the tried and trusted Acousticus Stomp, Pretty in Black and Lily Williams," Mr Butler said.

"However, this year's line-up on New Year’s Eve will also feature headline act Danny Walsh Banned and the newly minted Rosie & the Shadow Boxers."

Mr Butler said Danny Walsh Banned had its roots in Donald and had been "playing fever-pitched shows for more than a dozen years, serving up country-soul and rock’n’roll flavours infused with a touch of 70s Aussie boogie".

Rosie & the Shadow Boxers combines Whimsical Tricycle with Minyip-based father-and-daughter Matt and Rosie Barker.

"The band;s named after the two dogs who inspired the parody mashup 'Who let the Dog out?'," Mr Butler said.

"That particular song will be performed at A Day by the Lake with the students from Murtoa College who helped inspire the song and now know it off by heart."

DJ Brandon has appeared at the Esoteric festival near Donald and will hit the stage after Danny Walsh Banned as 2024 draws to a close.

The BYO concert in Murtoa will be free but registering is encouraged.

A sausage sizzle and food vans will be on site.

The event will run from 4pm on New Year's Eve, Tuesday December 31.

It is presented annually by Murtoa Events and the Lake Marma Committee of Management and is proudly sponsored this year by the RWE Campbells Bridge Wind Farm and Yarriambiack Council.
