Horsham honoured the memory of police officers who have died in the line of duty during a commemorative service at St Michael and John’s Catholic Church on September 29, National Police Remembrance Day.

On Tuesday morning, police members and their families gathered for a solemn service conducted by local police chaplain and parish priest, Monsignor Glynn Murphy, who led the congregation in prayer.

An Acknowledgement of Country was read by Senior Sergeant Matthew Haughton, followed by the Australian National Anthem sung by Voices of the Wimmera.

Acting Inspector Cameron Ross lit the Police Candle, and Matthew Olston read the Police Ode.

The Police Prayer was delivered by Paul Margetts of the Blue Ribbon Foundation, and Sergeant David Cosgriff performed the Requiem and Reveille.

The Roll of Honour was read aloud by Acting Senior Sergeant Brooke Ward, honouring seventeen police officers, protective service officers, police custody officers, Victorian public service employees and police chaplains who have died in Australia and South West Victoria from September 2025 to September 2026.

Acting Senior Sergeant Ward then introduced the wreath layers: Leading Senior Constable Troy Curran and Constable Rhys Morrell, who laid a wreath on behalf of serving members, and Detective Senior Constable Sam Foster, who laid a wreath on behalf of the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Representatives from the Horsham SES also laid a wreath.

Since Victoria Police’s establishment in 1853, there have been 178 Victoria Police officers killed while serving and protecting the community.
