Police zero in on harvest traffic

With early harvest under way in the Wimmera, ensuring the safety of road users both big and small is a priority for local police.

Acting Senior Sergeant Dale McIvor said Horsham police carried out the four-day Operation Harvest last weekend.

"Operation Harvest was conducted within the Wimmera and southern Mallee from Thursday through Sunday," Sen Sgt McIvor said.

"The focus was ensuring compliance of heavy vehicles for the harvest period."

Sen Sgt McIvor said police contributed more than 120 hours of dedicated patrol time with high visibility.

More than 250 motorists – including heavy-vehicle drivers – were alcohol-tested.

"A number of drug drivers were caught, a vehicle was impounded and various logbook offences were detected," Sen Sgt McIvor said.

Sen Sgt McIvor said police were asking all motorists to exercise extra care during the harvest period as the volume of heavy traffic using local roads increased.

Crash closure

A road at Dadswell's Bridge was partially closed following a two-vehicle collision on Sunday.

Horsham police said no-one was injured but the two vehicles were extensively damaged.

"An offending driver decamped from the scene," Sen Sgt Dale McIvor said.

"We're still investigating the cause and attempting to locate the offending driver."

Sen Sgt McIvor said police were asking for help from anyone who witnessed the incident.
