Horsham Aquatic Centre welcomed swimmers from across the state and South Australia for the Horsham Meet on Saturday, December 6.

In a day full of fast times and enjoyment amongst the 103 competitors, numerous swimmers posted qualifying times for both the State and Country Championships.

District coordinator Jenny Ough said it was a great meet full of wonderful performances.

“The meet went really smoothly, and everyone had a very enjoyable time,” Ough said.

“It was some people’s first time at the pool, and they loved the atmosphere and the quality that we’re putting out as a swimming meet.

“We had several swimmers make state qualifying times, from both the local swimmers and swimmers from visiting clubs as well, which was awesome.”

Amongst the standout performers were St Arnuad swimmers Heidi Start and Jesse Amos.

16-year-old Start was awarded the Jenkins Perpetual Trophy for the swimmer with the highest aggregate points from the meet, winning seven out of her ten individual races throughout the day.

Start took home two more trophies for her performances in the open women’s 100 metre backstroke and 100 metre butterfly.

Amos was the other standout swimmer from the district, taking home perpetual trophies for wins in the open men’s 100 metre backstroke and 100m butterfly.

Impressing for Horsham Swimming Club at the meet were Edward Jones, Abel Neumann, and Hylton Penfold, who each claimed at least six individual wins at the meet.

Ough said she was impressed by the young local swimmers, who she expects to improve in the lead up to the Wimmera District championships in March next year.

“We've got a good group of little seven and eight-year-olds coming through,” Ough said.

“There are also big numbers in the 10, 11, and 12-year age groups.

“As we come back in January, it will be interesting to see them tussle it out in races, ending with the Wimmera Championships.”

The Wimmera District season continues with the Warracknabeal Meet at Warracknabeal Memorial Swimming Pool on Saturday, December 13

Following the Christmas break, action resumes on January 31 when St Arnuad Swimming Pool hosts the Piranha’s Meet.
