Qube plans major Murtoa logistics facility
THE Yarriambiack Shire Council and Qube Logistics have joined forces to support the development of a multi-modal freight and logistics facility in Murtoa.
Mayor Andrew McLean said the proposed facility reflected the council’s economic development goals and would create local employment opportunities while increasing the amount of freight transported by rail.
“The project is expected to create jobs and transition Qube’s existing road freight customers to rail,” he said.
“Qube’s end-to-end logistics model could unlock new economic value for our shire and the wider region.”
Chief executive Tammy Smith said the community response to the project has been positive, with only very limited concerns voiced about the potential impact on traffic.
“Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” she said.
“While one person has raised traffic concerns directly to me, preliminary assessments indicate the impact is unlikely to be significant.”
Qube Logistics said the facility would provide a central hub for freight operations while improving access to rail transport for businesses throughout the region.
“As well as providing a hub for road transport services, our new Murtoa site will also include a rail siding,” a Qube Logistics spokesperson said.
Qube Logistics said the project would establish a long-term regional freight hub, creating employment opportunities during both the construction phase and the facility's ongoing operations.
Qube said the project would strengthen supply chain connections by allowing freight to be transported directly to the Port of Melbourne for distribution, opening new market opportunities.
“This will help open new markets for some customers and alleviate some of the truck movements in the region by providing a less emissions-intensive means of transport to the port,” the spokesperson said.
Mayor McLean said the proposed facility would deliver economic benefits for the municipality and help strengthen Murtoa’s position as a strategic transport and logistics centre for the local region.
The project remains subject to planning approval, with further information expected as it advances.
